Silver, parcel gilt traces. Measurements: Height: 13.7 cm. Maker’s mark: an escallop below a batón

The earliest hallmarked item in the collection and one of the earliest pieces of fully marked secular plate.  Found in the roof of St Andrew’s Church, Middleton, Yorkshire, and subsequently purchased by the Company in 1976. Similar in style to a chased, lobed spiral cup and cover in Goldsmiths Company Arms, dated 1480-1500.

Exhibited in “Gothic Art for England 1400-1547.” Victoria & Albert Museum, London, September 2003-January 2004.
